Decoding Wedding Guest Dress Codes

Have you ever received a wedding invitation that left you completely clueless about the wedding guest dress code? Between "black-tie optional" and "semi-formal," the language can be tricky to decipher. In 2024, the most common wedding dress code across the wedding industry is “formal attire” which can be interpreted very differently by many. But while formal attire may be a go-to for many, there are plenty of other dress codes that can (and will) appear on a wedding invitation.

In addition to codes, there are certain colors that always rule the debate on appropriate wedding guest attire. #1 rule of thumb: It goes without saying that nobody should wear white, except the bride. The debate of wearing red is long-standing, especially in the South. My view on it is: as long as you are not in the family or wedding party, red is always a beautiful color to wear as it is stunning on many. However, muted reds such as a Berry or Maroon are much more appropriate than a “fire-engine-red.”

What about floral ensembles with a white background? Ensure that about 30% or less of the dress is white in color and the colorful florals are the majority. If you’re on the fence? I would make a different choice - better safe than sorry!

In the end, it is key to note that dressing for a wedding is a way to show respect both for yourself and for the bride & groom you’re celebrating. Let’s decode what each dress code means below so you can start planning your ensemble that honors the couple and sets you up in style to dance the night away!

White-Tie

This is the most formal wedding attire option (like a White House dinner or royal event). For this type of soiree, women should wear an elevated formal, floor-length evening gown - no exception - with jewelry, heels, and an elegant clutch. Men are required to wear a tuxedo with tails, a formal white shirt, a vest, a bow tie, white or gray gloves, and formal footwear.

Black-Tie

A step down from white-tie attire, black-tie dress usually indicates a formal, evening event. Women should wear a floor-length gown in elevated fabrics like silk or organza. Additionally, it's okay for women to sport elegant pantsuits or an elegant jumpsuit if they are more comfortable with that specific silhouette. As for men, tuxedos are a must. A black bow tie, black vest or cummerbund, and leather shoes are also recommended.

Formal Or Black-Tie Optional

As the wording suggests, this dress code is slightly less formal than a black-tie wedding. For men, a tuxedo isn't required but can still be worn if preferred. If opting for a suit, a formal dark suit, white shirt, and a tie or bowtie are recommended. For women, the outfit choices remain similar: a floor-length gown, an elevated midi-length cocktail dress, or a dressy jumpsuit. In fact, there isn't much of a difference between black-tie and black-tie optional, except the main difference being it is more acceptable to wear a dress that shows the ankles/calf (which is not true of a black-tie dress code).

Cocktail

A small step below formal, cocktail attire is a very popular choice within today’s wedding space. It's a balance between elegant and comfortable and fancy and relaxed. Instead of a floor-length dress, women should opt for a tea-length, knee-length, or midi ensemble. Men are required to wear a suit and tie, regardless of the wedding's setting.

Semi-Formal Or Dressy Casual

Semi-formal gives flexibility on comfort and style. A key detail of dressing for a semi-formal or “dressy casual” wedding is paying close attention to WHEN the ceremony will take place. For evening events (5:00pm or after), darker, more formal colors are recommended, while light colors and airy fabrics work best for daytime or late afternoon events. Women should wear knee-length dresses, slip dresses, a dressy skirt and top, or an elegant pantsuit. As for men, they can opt for a dress shirt and slacks, with the option to wear a tie but not required.

Casual

Casual attire often indicates that the wedding is being held outdoors or on the beach, meaning the event will be much more laid-back. Women should wear a summer sundress or a floral patterned mini, with wedges or dressy sandals. Men should choose to wear dress pants or khakis paired with a collared shirt, with the option to also style their look with a sports jacket or linen blazer. Even at a casual wedding, jeans, shorts, t-shirts, or flip flops are not typically recommended unless approved by the couple.

Destination/Tropical

Destination or tropical weddings are usually humid and hot affairs, so it is recommended to be mindful of the weather and lean into lightweight + airy fabrics. As always, it is better to lean on the slightly dressier side if unsure. Common with a casual wedding, women should opt for a cotton or linen midi or maxi dress and nice sandals or wedges. It’s important to note: if the ceremony is on the beach, a longer dress is recommended due to windy conditions (don’t want a Marilyn Monroe dress faux pas!) For men's attire, button down short-sleeved linen shirts and khaki shorts or pants are wonderful for the tropics.
